In 1863, Henry Dunant and four colleagues in Geneva formed the “Committee for Relief to the Wounded.” Disturbed by the suffering witnessed at the Battle of Solferino, they sought to establish neutral aid for soldiers. This group evolved into the International Committee of the Red Cross, pioneering modern humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions.
